Dimming Method of LED Luminaires-DALI & DMX

Except for phase-cut, TRIAC/ELV, and 0/1-10V dimming, there are still two other dimming methods, DALI and DMX.

DALI stands for Digital Addressable Lighting Interface. It is a digital communication protocol that helps you manage the lighting systems. It is the international standard for the control of lighting systems. The DALI lighting control system can individually manage and control each light fixture and realize linear controlling of brightness, CCT, and light colors. It can also control lamps in groups, setting different scene modes, plans, and energy consumption monitoring.

The advantages of DALI are simple and easy installation process, accurate and reliable control, simultaneous adjusting of multiple light settings, and a wide range of applications.

DMX stands for Dynamic Mode Modulation, officially named DM512-A, having 512 dimming channels.

It is an integrated circuit chip that separates control signals such as brightness, contrast, and chroma, and processes them separately. DMX adjusts the teaching potentiometer to change the analog output level value, thereby controlling the brightness and hue of the video signal. It can realize R, G, and B, 256 kinds of gray scales, and full color range.

In practical applications, the DMX512 controller directly drives the RGB lines of LED lamps. Due to the weakening of the DC line, the controllers should install every 12 meters, and the control bus also needs to be paralleled, so the lines are many and complicated. Setting addresses on DMX512 receiver to accurately receive the dimming command, which is quite an inconvenient thing. Multiple controllers are interconnected to control complex lighting schemes, and the design of the operating software will also be more complicated.

Therefore, DMX512 is more suitable for occasions where lamps are concentrated together, such as stage lighting.
